An exhibition celebrating 800 years of Hereford's 1217 official copy of Magna Carta
The 1217 Charter brought to an end a civil war in England that the more famous 1215 Charter had failed to conclude. It was the first to be called 'Magna' (Great), to distinguish it from the smaller Forest Charter published alongside it. The cathedral possesses one of only four surviving official copies of the 1217 Magna Carta. It is too fragile to be on permanent display, although it did go on a 37,000-mile world tour in 2015, when it was seen by 25,000 people.
The Forest Charter which would have accompanied it is lost, but the cathedral is displaying a late 13th-century copy in the register of Bishop Richard Swinfield, kindly loaned by the Herefordshire Archive and Records Centre (HARC).
It's quite amazing what a community can achieve when #workingtogether. We send huge thanks to these #Leominster Guys, Mike Mifflin and Micky Thomas, for supporting our #bunting initiative. They have made an early start on this Sunday morning completing the finishing touches, thanks to Val #LeominsterBusinessGroup for coordination.
....and this is what you get here at Wickton for breakfast ( along with the best bacon, sausages, the very best proper free ranging hens eggs - they are to be seen wandering around the gardens feeding on grass and all the other things they find tasty! Sour dough ( made with organic flour ) makes the very best toast ever - with proper butter and homemade compotes and preserves. Could there be anything better? Thank you Peter Cook ! ...
Home to more antique shops than you can shake a perfectly-preserved piece of pottery at, it's the place to visit if you're upgrading the interior of your very own stately pile. More bric-a-brac than chandelier and caviar? Not a problem, there are bargains to be had too.
The famous statue of Edward Elgar in Hereford was revealed in 2005, outside of Hereford Cathedral. It has since become a staple of Hereford's landmarks.
What do you think of the statue, and which other Herefordians deserve a statue of their own in our City?
